Reasons I quit...
I am sick of smelling like smoke. I want more control over my life. I want to improve my health. I don't want to spend money on cigarettes. Most places I like to go are now non-smoking only.
I have quit for 3 yrs, 1 yr, 9 months & 1 yr. 7 days, 1 day, etc & on & on & on.Yes, I hate smoking.I have kids that hate it. I smoke out in the cold, rain, etc.I could give you 5 grueling health & others issues I had to deal with the last 9yrs. But, I also know that there is no reason to smoke, no matter what. I have quit cold turkey, I have tried every otc as well as prescription aids. I have been to a hypnotist, twice Yet I still smoke. I am in a 12 step program, and have been since 1985, Yet I cannot or do not apply it to smoking. I go to bed just about every night, praying that I will not smoke the next day. I have failed a zillion times. It is the most frustrating thing I have ever dealt with, as far as addictions. Yet, I know I am capable of quitting, as I have before. It is like every other addiction, you cannot do it for anyone, but yourself. So, you can imagine how I feel everytime I try & fail. What can you tell me about what you learned/found in this that actually changed they way you look at quitting. Because, you know how you get just so desperate to quit, you will try anything, and if it fails, you get tired of trying? again & again & again?? thanks
I hear ya! This isn't my first time quitting either BUT I am absolutely positively DETERMINED not to give in this time! First thing I did was pray and pray hard! Even though I had prayed for help to quit before this prayer was different. I ask God to do WHATEVER IT WOULD TAKE to MAKE ME stop smoking because I COULD NOT DO IT ON MY OWN!! Just admitting that was a REALLY BIG step!! Shortly after saying that prayer (probably within a week) I started getting really sick...I mean deathly sick! I could not breathe! I eventually ended up going to hospital over an asthma attack and I had bronchitis. I was so sick for 2 months and could not breathe to the point of feeling like I was going to pass out EVERYDAY. I literally could not smoke even if I wanted to...I asked for it, right, and I am glad I did! I was scared to think if I kept smoking it could be like that the rest of my life! This would take everything away from me that I love like gardening or playing with my kids or just simply taking a walk!! I could just picture myself being miserable in a wheelchair on oxygen and depending on everyone to do everything for me...I wasn't going to let that happen!!!
Every other time I quit I never had a chance because I always had this mental dialog "You can't. You'll get stressed and start again anyway. You can't. It's too hard to quit. You can't. You need it. You can't do it!" I HAD to change the way I was thinking!! Now whenever I think about smoking I say to myself “It’s gross! It stinks! You don't need it! You aren't a smoker! It will kill you! It's poison! Why would you want to give the cigarette companies so much money to kill you!?! What do your kids think of you?!? What example are you setting for your kids!?! Don't you want to live a long HEALTHY life!?!" I did some other things that helped me...like herbs, having support, reading, etc... Please email me and I will be more than happy to support you, pray for you and work together with anyone who wants to keep on quitting with me : ) YOU CAN DO IT!!
I do understand everything you have emailed, above & I have though the same way, reasons, my sons & all. I also became so ill, that I quit, after a hospital stay. Yes, quitting is very difficult, and I do pray & have literally begged God. I know I cannot do it alone. STAYING QUIT,Becomes overwhelming at some points and I have gotten through some very tough times, without smoking. It is Picking up that ONE, that starts the vicious cycle all over again & makes me feel so disgusted and discouraged, that I just smoke. Maybe I never have the right "plan" as i want to stop, Really want to stop, each time I try, How instrumental, was the book/pamphlet to you prior to quitting, during and after? thx
I know. It really is not easy at all but it truely is a fight for our lives! I had to do everything to avoid people who smoke, avoid any store where I can buy cigarettes, and kept myself busy obsessively sewing until I felt strong enough to say no to a cigarette (about 2 weeks)! I read through the book a few times and it really made me think about what I was doing, why I was doing it and how I was going to stop my behavior. Yes, this book did help me but it was not the only thing that helped...I used a combination of things. This book & the florida quit line helped me with the thought process of realizing I truely wanted to quit, why I wanted to quit and they helped me make a plan as to how I was NOT going to start the habit again. Yes, This book should help you, as it helped me, but it still takes a commitment & determination. You can do it! : )

Smoked for 15 years. I had pneumonia every year and plurosy which is soooo painful. Quit cold turkey with the help of prayer and haven't had a cigarette now in 17 years. It's wonderful! Congrats and cheering you on!
That is very encouraging to hear that it can be done!! I wouldn't have made it this far without prayer for sure! Thanks : )...can't wait for the day that I can say it's been 17 years since my last cig! Thank you for the encouragement. It really means a lot from someone who has been there. One day at a time and all things are possible ; ) Right.
