Description

The listing, HUGE Purple Prickly Pears (15+ seeds) has ended.

There's a huge old prickly pear clump down near the hardware store that has the biggest fruit on it that I've ever seen. Round, and about baseball size -- waaay bigger than the normal little oval fruits on all the other prickly pears in the neighborhood. (Just for comparison: the little fruit in the upper left-hand corner of the picture was taken from a plant just down the street -- and that's a quarter in the pic, not a dime!).
And the fruit is a really deep purple, juicy, not too many seeds.
Interestingly, the pads on this one plant tend to be thick and round (ping pong paddle shaped) rather than flat, sort of pointed ovals, like you usually see. The pads do have spines, but are not insanely prickly.
In this climate the fruit ripens in mid fall (like now) and hangs on well into January (or until someone comes along and takes it all!).
So here's the offer: 15 (at least) fresh seeds.

I know nothing about gardening but always wanted to, so I won a bunch of seeds last year, including some prickly pair. I didn't really know what to do with them. Lol! So I stuck them all in soil, watered and they all sprouted in about two weeks, the plants are still very little, no flowers or fruit, but they are growing! Lol! I should have researched them but it turned out, my tomatoes did awesome! Lol! Great auction! These are beautiful. New fan and watching! :)

I don't know - sometimes it's good to just do it and have high hopes for the outcome....if you'd done a bunch of research you probably would have come across some expert or other who loves telling us all how complicated/difficult things are...;-)

So true! I find you actually have to know about something to understand what most of them say! So, since I knew nothing I just tried! Lol! Now I have several little prickly pairs, and a little mango tree that lived through winter! Lol! :))

I think they're hardy to zone 4 or 5 ...they will grow almost everywhere in the US..easy to take care of (no care needed, just a very modest amount of water) they do need well drained soil...starting them from seed takes while because seeds are slow to germinte...fruit is rather bland on these purple ones, but the color is fantastic - so folks add it to punch or margaritas or mix w lemon juice to make jelly...the pads can be peeled & cooked as a vegetable - some think it tastes like geen beans

I have never tried to start prickly pear from a seed. You say they take awhile to get started, how long would you say? I have gotten prickly pear from listia before but was sent the pad. Do you ever do that? Thank you.

I found a lot of good information on growing prickly pear from seed by googling just that... There are several articles on the homeguides section of SFGate.com... As I recall the seeds need to be scarified, and even then they take quite a while to germinate...hope this helps

I'm hoping the mango tree will bear fruit, and if it does that it tastes good! There are steps you are supposed to follow with mango trees, with a male and female tree and it has to be one that is not a wild one, or something? Again, I guess I don't know enough to understand! Lol! But I recieved a seed already started and was told it would bear good tasting fruit. So I'll see, but it's pretty regardless! :)
