It's not going to let you access internet if there is not a wifi signal available, no. It works like a signal booster, then people can connect to it if you allow them too. It is not a cell type dsl router. I have one of those I may list after the contract is up with T-Mobile in July but it will have a minimum bid on it of probably 100000 because they cost well over 150.00 when I purchased it.

You should be able to get a much better signal than without. That is what this does it give you extended range for weak wifi signals.

you would need a password if the neighbor is password secured, right? But you could use to connect with mcdonalds from a further distance, am I even close?

Yes, just like any WiFi connections if it is password protected you need a password. If its open like McDonalds, Starbucks, etc, etc... you just login.

Just a couple questions to make sure I am understanding what this does:
If I have a wireless router, can this be in another room and perform its function?
Does it take my Wifi signal, strengthen it, and then output the strengthened signal as a "new" Wifi signal, or does it simply make the current Wifi signal stronger? Is it compatible with any laptop? And, finally, my Internet provider gave me a package with like 3 mb/s max download speed, how can this boost the speed past that?
