The listing, BEAUTIFUL LUPINES! ~ 50+ SEEDS! has ended.

EASY TO GROW & BEAUTIFUL! Cultivated in Egypt & Mediterranean regions for 2000 yrs, lupines prefer cooler climates of zones 3 through 10 (Wildflower Info website).

Choose location in full sun to light shade. Sow seeds outside in fall, Sept through Nov. Cover with 1/8 in. of soil, leaving 12 to 14 in. between plants. They grow long taproots & should bloom the first year. No need for fertilizer if they have adequate sun, water & a long cold winter.

Northern climates ~ lupines must go through a 3-month period of freezing in order to grow! (Super cold climates~ dig them up, put them in the garage, leave the roots somewhat dry (but never too dry~ you want them to stay alive) & then plant them in the spring.

There are different ways to get the seeds ready for planting.
One way: Nick each seed with a sharp knife to help it germinate & soak seeds overnight in water before planting them. Keep the soil warm (72 degrees F) to facilitate germination. When the seedlings get their 3rd leaf, move them to a much cooler area that provides bright light. Transplant outdoors or in large pots when the seedlings are 4 in. tall.

Another way: Place the seeds in damp paper towels in a plastic zipper bag. Store bag in the fridge for 7 days. Carefully rub lupine seeds between sandpaper briefly to break down the seeds' shells. Loosen your planting location 12 to 20 inches deep with a garden fork or tiller. Make sure your soil is well drained, and amend it with peat moss if it is clay. Lupine tolerates sandy soil.

Third way: I don't do anything special to the seeds. The lupines replant themselves by spreading their seeds, so I've not had to prepare the seeds in any way.

More Information:
Aphids love lupines~ try to attract ladybugs, or spray them with a light solution of water, vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. After the flowers have faded, deadhead.

They really are ~ and they grow on their own out back in my yard. What's really nice is you don't have to do much to grow them, at least here.

Do you dig yours up in the fall? I'd think Maine would be an extreme. (colder?)
Perhaps they'd have a chance in MO. They are soo beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome! I actually don't do anything ~ they just grow out back around all of the other flowers. They're just dormant in the winter here, and our winter's are very long and cold. I've read where people cut there's back in the fall, but I don't do that, unless I"m extracting seeds. I've cut some flower stems and left some and they all seem to come back regardless. This year, I plan to move some of them to a location away from my blueberries. I'm planning a little reorganizing and relocating so I can expand on my vegetable garden.

Thanks so much for your interest. I think they'll grow just about anywhere. And, yes, I think they'd grow in your state just fine.
