Jiaogulan (JOW-goo-lawn)
(Gynostemma pentaphyllum)
** Please note, that while the following is a very good guideline, I know of a good sized patch of jiaogulan in the state of Wisconsin, that is out in an open field and has survived there for several years like that.

Native to China and other parts of Asia, Jiaogulan has been grown and cultivated for many centuries, loved by locals there for its medicinal properties. Jiaogulan helps with;
immune system
cholesterol difficulties
cancer
motion sickness
blood pressure
diabetes.

Jiaogulan is an herb native to China and other parts of Asia. It has been grown and cultivated for many centuries, loved by locals there for its medicinal properties. Jiaogulan is thought to help with the immune system, cholesterol difficulties and motion sickness.

Cultivating jiaogulan, like many other herbs, is a process of constant climate control and careful soil care. Protecting the root system and proving warmth and enough water are key to keeping jiaogulan healthy and productive

1 - Till the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches. Keep the soil loose and light; packing will only stunt root growth. Add the top soil evenly to give the plants a healthy beginning.

2 - Moisten the ground lightly, do not let it get soggy or sticky. Dig a 3-inch wide hole, 6 inches down. Place these holes one per 12 inches. Set the seeds into the ground, only after you are sure there will be no more frosts, and cover with excess soil.

3 - Water the soil only once per week. After the jiaogulan has sprouted, add the concentrated fertilizer to the water and spray out onto the ground. Do not water while the sun is overhead; the water will not be absorbed by the plant.

4 - Prune plants to stay within their own square foot of space. Overlapping can cause stress on stems and rivalry for sun and nutrients. Trim back any vines that are brown or broken, trim back branches at their parent stem, which have grown past your desired length.

Jiaogulan is born of a warm and dry climate. In Asia, where the jiaogulan is native, the average precipitation is 20 inches during the growing season of May through September. For this reason, if you are expecting rainfall, do not water the garden. Too much water can kill the root system of jiaogulan, because it is not able to adapt to the excess moisture.

What part of plant do you use? I would not beable to grow it here, too cold n wet. But would be interested to try some of the plant. I have genetic B12 & D dyficency which basically is a auto immune disorder. I would love to be able to try some of it. If you have a live plant you could harvest some and I'd gladly pay.

The leaves are used dried for teas, fresh in salads, or right off the vine. Up until now, I have been buying already dried tea, from China. I do know of a patch that has been growing in Wisconsin for several years, just to see if they could do it. Pretty wet & cold there! I have also seen pics of Jiaogulan growing in pots. Might be worth a shot? I am working on a raised bed for spring planting, keep in touch & I will let you know how it goes. I will try sending you a couple of places that sell the tea...kind of expensive...a little later in the day.
