It seems to be a combination of things. Yes tarnish, marks, scratches. I am sure could be polished up very nicely. I sell antiques on the side and never polish anything to keep the patina but if you win you can do what you like to it. BTW I am a 32 old male and dont really know much about Compacts or makeup ;)
