Description

The listing, ~Verbascum (Banana Custard) rare~ Seeds (30) has ended.

Verbascum is a rare, unusual and exotic biennial herb that can grow up to 8 feet. In its first year, large, velvety leaves appear. The following year a tall spire rises up where, over the summer, yellow flowers appear. It is hardy in zones 4 to 10. Verbascum has been around since ancient times and was actually used as torches. The woolly leafed plant that often grows in the wild. The leaves can be used as an alternative for candlewicks. Medicinally, mullein has been said to aid in relieving lung problems by clearing out mucus. It also helps to soothe colds. Mullein can be added to a wildflower garden for the beautiful yellow flower spikes, or to a medicinal garden for use in your natural medicine cabinet. You can gather seeds or let it self sow. The Banana Custard is a beautiful and rare strain of Verbascum. However, it behaves similarly to the more common strains. That said, I think it's worthwhile to give potential buyers a bit of information.
Verbascum (or mullein) is an invasive species throughout much of the US. I know it's considered an invasive because I've worked at eradicating it throughout the Sierra Nevadas, the mid-west, Montana, etc. Once it takes hold, eradication takes many years, as it grows anywhere disturbed and sunny and the seeds last a long time. It out-competes native flora and ultimately destroys habitat. It is particularly dangerous in wildfire-prone areas. I don't say this to disparage anyone who wants to grow it, but to recommend that (in North America) it only be grown indoors or else that the seed heads are removed before it can reproduce outdoors.
I apologize if I offend anyone; I only mean to inform so as to protect native environs.

It's nice to share info. since all areas are different in what will grow and what won't in your area. Thanks for sharing. I have not had that problem with Verbascum, I only have 2 plants one in the front yard and one in the back. Although they self sow, I haven't had any pop up any where other than there they are planted.

I did a little research and it looks like the common type is invasive, but this gorgeous yellow is a hybrid and is non-invasive. Which I'm happy about because I want it! http://homeguides.sfgate.com/types-mullein-71190.html
