The mass of accumulated information in regard to essential oils and their constituents has necessitated the division of this work into two volumes. The present volume deals entirely with the essential oils themselves in a series of monographs. The second volume, which is now in the press, covers the necessary ground relating to the analyses of essential oils and the characters of their isolated constituents. It also deals with artificial aromatic bodies which are not present in essential oils, but which form the groundwork of synthetic perfumery. It is believed that this division of the subject will be found more convenient than the arrangement of the subject-matter in previous editions. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to Messrs. Baker and Smith of the Technological Museum, Sydney, who have been exceedingly kind in placing much information and several illustrations at my disposal. I am also indebted to M. Gattefosse, Messrs. Eoure-B ertrand Fils, the Monopoly Bureau of the Government of Formosa, the Indian Forestry Department, the Editor of the Chemist and Druggist, and the Editor of the Perfumery and Essential Oil Becord for permission to reproduce numerous illustrations and much useful information.
