Rudyard Kipling was born in India in 1865, but in 1871 he was sent to England to live with a foster family--an unhappy experience which is written about in "BAA, BAA, BLACK SHEEP". Kipling's only son died in the Great War, and the second story, THE GARDENER, is an allegory of his suffering as a parent.
