So different I keep coming back and staring at it. What is the back like, looped for stringing?

In the back there is like a metal clasp like thing and on the top there are three loops for stringing. I really don't know why there is something on the back. It is such a unique unordinary piece. But it is so beautiful and thanks for looking. :-)
