Description
The listing, Inuit Oosik/Whale Tooth Artwork. has ended.
This one is a little different. Smallest of three pieces that I own. I purchased all three within the same time frame. This was about 10 years ago. All 3 came from an art gallery in Alaska. Oosik is the petrified penile bone of Whales, Beavers, Walruses, Sea Lions and others. They can only be collected legally by Inuit Indians of Alaska. Really a cool piece. This particular one is signed and numbered as shown in pics. Thanks and Happy Bidding!!
Questions & Comments
this really beautiful wish I would have see before I cometed all of my cions:(
I can't seem to get another pic in here. There is a photo next to a quarter and a small paper with my name on it. The paper is just a little longer than a standard business card.
My husband is half Eskimo and half Tsimsian Indian. He grew up in Anchorage and Annette Island. Annette Island (Metlakatla) is the only Indian Reservation in Alaska. A whale penal bone is actually about 2 feet long. If I am able to win the bid I will let you know for certain the origin of the piece. I intend to go all in if necessary, since it is a part of my husband's culture.
Hmm , I wonder what else that covers? I love the bear! Not sure how I feel about the fossilized whale male member bone!! lol! Too funny! (I don't see why fossilized anything should be a problem ,, I think the law is against harvesting live animals , and to protect them! This animal was probably dead for centuries to be fossilized.
Be careful! Just because it is legal for the inuit to harvest/sell does not mean it is legal for you to sell. Probably best to check into individual state laws before attempting to buy or sell this. Saying "I didnt know" wont keep you from going to jail.
These are not a set. They are 3 pieces of same medium. I haven't really thought about putting them all up. The other 2 were purchased at a much higher price and I'm not sure how well they would do in this market. Thank You so much for asking. F&W U.
