With 8 arms, the octopus shares some symbolic meanings with the spider as well as the meanings of number 8. The infinity symbol (the number 8 turned on its side) is apparent when we consider that the Octopus, & Spiders, have 8 arms (legs). The number 8 involves cycles, passage of time, & evolution. The octopus is also associated with the symbology of water. The immense ocean is a sign of power & strength, dominating all other symbols of water; the source of all life. The ocean is unpredictable & uncontrolable; always at it's own will or Neptune's (Roman god of the sea). The ocean is referred to as a tear of God or the sorrow; a place where you leave your bad memories & sadness. An octopus symbolizes complexity, diversity, mystery, vision, intelligence, illusion, variability and insight. Adornments like octopus medallions were worn by sailors to ward off evil. The octopus moves skillfully in a realm that is in constant motion (water). Ever changing, shifting, and wafting in accordance with the pull of the moon (the tides). Although vastly mobile and quite the traveler, the octopus is primarily a bottom dweller. In symbolic (totem) terms this is analogous of being grounded while still having the ability to exist in the watery world of the psyche.
