Jlynn , I think it isn't excelsior, but the back of the suede circle it is mounted on . It's Napoleon , so presumably French "Emp et Roi" would mean Emperor and King. My guess is it's a commemorative medal made into a pin for some event. He crowned himself Emperor from 1804 to 1814, was responsible for Religious Emancipations of Religious groups in many countries, and famous for his "Napoleonic Code of Laws" still used in some countries and I think Louisiana. He was born in Corsica(Italy ) and they say he spoke French with a heavy Corsican accent . He is most famous for liberating France from Feudalism , and his military tactics are still studied today , world wide, as he is considered amongst the top military Leaders in the world . Some say he died of stomach cancer(why you see him with his hand on his stomach , was likely he was in great pain) others say he was poisoned with arsenic. Josephine , one of his wives(the most famous) had a son by her first husb who was killed in the French Revolution , after she remarried Napoleon , he adopted her son, and her daughter married his brother(it's complicated! Lol) . He later remarried and had one son (Napoleon II who died of Tuberculosis at age 21 , he was in power for only 2 weeks).Napoleon was born in 1769 , this is the only major event I can think of that might coincide with a celebration around the 1970's . Though I think a book was published containing recently found letters or diaries (or both) about 1978(But I am no expert, some historian might know more).
