Gardening isn't brain surgery. Seeds will generally grow on their own but, the best thing you can do for your garden is to learn about 'Companion Planting'. That's where you plant particular plants that are beneficial to other plants. As like basil will deter particular pests from tomatos. There are also vegetable plants that can be enemies of one another. For instance, it's not a good idea to plant cabbage where you going to lay your melon (particularly musk melon or canteloupe). Cabbage carries a particular fungus or mold on the leaves that can go into the ground during watering. Then during the summer when you plant your melon, the fungus can become active and attack the stem of the melon plant.

American Indian's have been companion planting for centuries. It's called the "Three Sisters" to the native people. Plant corn, beans and squash or melon together. All three help one another.

You'll do just fine. Basically clear an area out of weeds and rock and throw down seed and cover with soil. The backyard gardeners secret to success is manuer tea (compost tea), companion planting and knowing when to start your seeds.

Marigold and Nasturtium flowers are an absolute wonder in the garden as well. They deture many bugs and pests.
