Yes - it IS Legal! – U.S. Code Title 18, Chapter 17, Section 331: Prohibits,, among other things, fraudulent alteration and mutilation of coins. This statue does not, however, prohibit the mutilation and defacing of coins if done without fraudulent intent (such as Jewelry) or if the mutilated/defaced coins are not used fraudulently.

Uhm, You must have put that U.S. code on there because you have had people question or complain before...lol That is so funny, Now if the machine turned it into a $1 coin..THAT would be different! I LOVE THIS COIN! So nice to think of us Mothers! Was this yours or one you acquired? Was just curious if you knew what state or where this coin show was listed on the penny? Thank-You <3

Indeed, I had people write to me about how illegal it is to mutilate coins, yada, yada, yada. Some people think they know something, and go on their high horse without knowing any better.

I designed and rolled this design, and I made it for the ANA (American Numismatic Association) Spring convention, that happened to fall 2 years in a row on Mother's Day.

These were given to the attendees of the convention for free, and I have some left that I'm offering here on Listia.

I just realized that i have another ANA coin! It say's TECOO A.N.A. with an Owl on it & the Owl's eyes make up the the last two letters (OO) in TECOO. 1966-1981 Chicago-New Orleans 15th Anniversary. Pretty cool!
