Questions & Comments
This is called Niello (means blackened), the black is made by mixing silver, copper and sulphides and is lke an enamel but comprised out of metal, the sulphides give it the black color. It is a technique that dates back as far as Ancient Egypt. If this piece is marked Siam, then it should pre-date 1949, if it is marked Thai or Thailand then it was made after 1949, hope this helps :)
No, it's exactly how I bought it. I don't clean any of my jewelry, except for a dusting with a soft tooth brush. I have had several SIAM pieces...none this shiny, that's what makes me wonder...
Yay! Finally one my size! My wrist is 5", and I usually have to get little girls, but it's such a limited market because there is often a girly charm or something attached! Thank you for posting! F/W/B! =)
Referring to checking silver content, there's a simple, easy method everyone should know that works well, especially on larger piedes like this: All you need to do is to take an icecube, and split it into two fairly even pieces...place one piece in a plate, place the 2nd piece on the piece of silver you want to test. IF THE PIECE IS SILVER, THE ICE WILL MELT ALMOST TWICE AS FAST ON THE SILVER AS ON THE PLATE. The reason for this is that silver conducts heat at a very rapid rate, much faster than porcelain or glass, etc.! It's a cheap, nearly foolproof method, though it doesn't work well for tiny pieces where it's difficult to perch the ice on it...
This is a gorgeous piece! We still use the Niello process today...if you get a sterling ring, for instance, that's in the motif of a Celtic Knotwork pattern (popular), you will note that the perspective that causes the knotwork to jump out in 3 dimentions is provided by 'blackening' the submerged lines, or spaces between knots, and it's done using this process- It's very quick and easy, and produces dramatic results. Another FYI from Victor, lol! Blessed be, all!! Sure wish I had the credits to win this one! ;-)>
There’s an old story. When the sky darkens with storm clouds rolling in, and lightning streaks across the sky followed by the boom of thunder, the Thai child spreads his hands wide and says, “It is Mekala being chased by Ramasoon again.”
In the old Thai folktale, Mekala is a beautiful sprite, fun loving and frolicking through the clouds in the sky. Ramasoon desires her and tries to sneak up on her under the cloak of storm clouds. He wields an ax of thunder, intending to throw it at her and lame her, preventing her from escaping. But she has protection, a crystal sphere shooting lightning to blind her attacker just before he throws his thunder ax and his throw goes wide allowing her to escape.
I promised my little brother I’d share it with his fiancee. The original folktale is longer and wonderfully engaging.
In a recent interview of me by Kelly Yeakle, I referred to other Thai folktales and a wonderful comment was made about the way I’ve kept in touch with my roots.
Don’t be surprised if future stories touch on the rich mythology and folktales of Thailand and other regions of Asia. There’s so much scope for the imagination there! I HAVE THE FLIP RINGS AND i HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT OTHER THINGS ALSO, CAN BE DATED AROUND 1930'S TO 1950'S i BELIEVE
Awesome piece, but way out of my league. Would be nice or should I say will be nice for the winner. Enjoy and as always may you be blessed in all you Do, Say, Think and in your Actions.
Evelyn43..you are so right about the item..and it is an antique that made in 1949 in Thailand. ( Siam ) I had one and gave it to my sister already. It is very pretty in person..Thanks so much for your information.
My mother once had a bracelet very similar to this, I believe the silouette in the dark panels was a different picture, but she got it when she went to italy on vacation at a jewelry store there. And that was back in the early 1950's
