Description

The listing, Vintage Hand carved cedar trinket box, mirrored inside. has ended.

What a beautiful little cedar trinket box. 10.75" wide, 6.25" deep, 4.5 " at the top of the arced cover. Everything about this shrieks handmade, from the not quite perfect hand carving on the top and sides, to the uneven varnish coating that shows brush marks on the bottom and sides. The top has an oval picture, 5.5"x2.5" of a woods scene from a simpler time. Scene has small chip out of left edge. Brass hinges and clasp are perfect. Inside the lid a mirror is decorated with a white floral stencil, and is mounted with metallic embossed paper over cardboard. Beautifully done mounting. Interior is unfinished cedar, showing some glue overrun from this handmade project. Bottom is slightly cracked. Box shows wear from being handled and stored, but mostly scuffs and dents. 3 out of the four legs are damaged.

Imagine the history of this box. Some loving individual made this box, perhaps for a fiancee, a wife, a daughter. Sure he was an amateur, but his loving effort shows in every crooked carving and every brush stroke. Buy this for a loved one , to pass on the caring tradition, or buy it for yourself, and inherit the romance and mystery that surrounds this box.

The best part of this is it appears to have been made by an amateur. I cannot imagine a craftsman at the time leaving lacquer and glue marks.

When I look at the style of the picture on top, as well as the rose pattern of the carving, I would say 1950's.
