These are nifty, but I'm a bit confused as to intended use. The prefolds look way to fancy to actually use in a diaper--are they for burp cloths?

No these are for a diaper. There are many parents out there that do not put covers on prefolds when they are home. But they can be used as a burp cloth if you decided to. We used them as diapers. They are very absorbent.
