Trimming a dog's nails can seem like a long and tedious process to someone who has never tried to perform this type of dog grooming routine before. It is not uncommon for dogs to act out against this. To help avoid this type of behavior from occurring, people can begin by making nail grooming a habit when the dog is young. The way the nails are clipped, how the dog is handled, and what type of nail clippers are a part of the process, all make a difference.
Two of the most common types used are the scissor-type nail clippers (pictured for sale) and the guillotine nail clipper type. Dogs who have long nails that curl need to have the scissor-type used on the nail. If trimming the nails does not take place as often as it should, the dog is at risk of having the nail grow into the pad of the foot. This is something that happens many times with the dew claws, which are located higher up on the paw, and do not ordinarily touch the ground so the claws do not wear down like the claws on the front of the foot pad do. In order to cut nails that are too long or that curl, a person should use the scissor-style of clippers. For almost any other type of nail trimming job, the guillotine type of nail clippers is appropriate.
