1920s German Zugspitze Figural Briar Pipe - Bearded Man - Silver - Ox Horn Stem
Antique German Figural Pipe
This late 1920s German figural hunting/mountaineering pipe,
carved in the likeness of a bearded mountaineer,
and commemorating the 1926 completion
of the cable car up Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak,
is a wonderful piece of craftsmanship.
The bowl is carved of "Real Briar Foreign,"
and the upper part of the stem and mouthpiece
appear to be of turned and steam bent ox horn.
The pipe has a number of pieces of silver decor,
including plated band and windcap,
an enameled silver tag reading "Frankfurt" on the front
and "835" on the back (not quite .925 sterling),
and a dangling cable car marked "Zugspitze 2963M"
and "800," again, not what would be considered sterling today.
Interestingly enough, or maybe not,
is that the mountain, Zugspitze, is considered to be 2962 meters high today,
one meter shorter than at the time this pipe was made.
The pipe is in good condition for its age,
and shows some wear from storage and handling.
This pipe is a fairly stable sitter.
This nice old figural pipe measures 7.6" long,
with a 2.2" outer bowl depth,
and an outer bowl width of 1.5",
and a chamber diameter of .7" .
I believe you'll be happy adding this pipe to your collection.
Best of luck bidding.
