The ide plug is to change the perpose of the hard drive.by moving the plug into different positions the harddrive can be slaved to another hard drive giving u more space to store stuff.and no a laptop hard drive is not compatiable with a desk top computer.

By the pins on the end.sata doesnt have as many as the other one does.

A laptop hard drive will work in a desktop as long as they are BOTH, IDE connections Or they are BOTH sata! Whichever you might have.
