Questions & Comments
I do not question this snuff bottle at all. I also am not questioning your representation of what you believe they are. However, it is not a netsuke by any means. To learn about what a netsuke is simply view this educational link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netsuke I have been active in antiques and collectibles for 48 years of my 67 year life so far. I am simply passing my knowledge forward and trying to help a younger generation. Mammoth ivory schreger lines converge at an angle 90 degrees or less, while elephant ivory schreger lines converge at 115 degrees or more. Little bottles like this have been carved so many different mediums I don't have enough fingers and toes to explain them all. ( ͡ ° ͜o ͡ ° ) and bidding Doc
The mark on the bottom could mean a number of things. The doctor is retired from this auction as it has exceeded his max bid Good luck to Jo and all you bidders. Doc
Furthermore, I didn't even know these questions and comments were here, Sorry about that! I am learning though. Thanks Doc for all the good info. I own about 11 of these pieces and they have been viewed by a Netsuke Dealer in Beverly Hills. I've been TOLD they are Ivory but again, I am no expert. I KNOW Ebay doesn't do Ivory yet I have sold them with 100% Feedback from everyone I have sold to. I have ZERO negative feedback. I looked up my info Doc and appreciate your expertise. I certainly don't know for sure. The ONLY thing I know for sure is that my dog's name is BANJO. Thanks for all the questions and comments everyone...
I was told that it is Ivory. Whoever wins this auction will be the luckiest person in the world because I have been selling them on Ebay for $ 250.00+. I didn't know WHERE to enter a starting amount as this piece is my FIRST AUCTION. Lucky you. THe signature on the bottom looks like a '12'. I am unable to modify ANY part of this listing because it won't let me. Sorry about that.
SO SORRY!!! It is my first time on Listia- I didn't even know these comments were here-Please excuse me. Genuine ivory will have fine lines in a crisscrossing grain pattern, not always but often visible in a well taken picture. Ivory generally does not have pits, but bone does, so be cautious of a snuff bottle presented as ivory if the surface looks pitted. Plastic fakes will lack the fine "schreger lines" or criss-crossing grain lines seen in genuine ivory. The lines can also appear parallel but are fine and close together. A few more cautions about ivory. There is a type of genuine ivory called "mammoth ivory" which is fossilized prehistoric ivory from the wooly mammoth. This can be light in color and resemble modern elephant ivory, so a modern bottle could be carved of this material and be presented as antique. Finally, when dealing with elephant ivory, research the current laws regarding this material. Some countries prohibit import, export, or sale of elephant ivory. As a general rule, purchase of genuinely antique elephant ivory is legal in the United States. I can't say for sure, but the items I have are NOT pitted, leaving me to believe they are some sort of Ivory. They are original and I sell them on Ebay for several hundreds of dollars, feel free to look me up. I am not trying to sell anything fake and I can't say positively as my Grandparents purchased them in the 50's and are now deceased. I inherited them and they appear to be authentic Netsuki. I have also taken them to an antique appraiser who agrees with me re: the authenticity of them. Hope that helps.
