that is exactly what i was wondering closet. if the low weight is due to wear. but it does not look like a grams worth of wear. i'm not a fan of the drop method. if you drop it on a hard surface from a high enough height to get the nice ring sound and it is real that will damage it. there are better ways to prove genuine or not.
i have alot of morgan dollars like this and some trades that are not stamped copy made before the 1976 hobby act law and would be more than happy to sell them if anyone interested contact me. I have one on now that you can see.
First it wouldn't be on listia. Can seller provide weight of it in grams that is how you will know,The fakes weight less than originals. Ebay is flooded with them.
Grab a silver test kit for 3 bucks and test it. It's only real way to know, but it will leave a small mark on the coin where it was ground on the stone. If you're careful how you do it you won't even be able to see the scratch.
hmmm... i'm looking at it, can't really see any marks 2 and 8. closet, your saying the fakes are cast and not stamped ?? that would explain the ease in manufacturing something like this. saris, i defiantly appreciate your honesty, a too rare of a quality today.
i was in China few years ago. i was strolling around a wholesale market, over a million square feet, and came across a guy that had every type of fake you could imagine. from ping golf clubs to beanie babies, rolex to US pennies. There is a guy on ebay that seems to have a roll of uncirculated 1909-s VDBs and is selling them off 1 at a time. without making any accusations I have wondered if they are genuine. he gets thousands for each one. a roll of those would be a nice yard sale find !!
So at that weight that I posted it seems to be a repro? I did a drop test like suggested but I don't know what to listen for exactly. It doesnt go 'thud' it has a ring to it but dont know if it is a 'silver' ring or not...
seems like if the makers of fakes were to use real silver they could then get away with a lot more deception. hard to imagine that is not done on the real key dates. what is your opinion on that closet ? you know your stuff.
you can flick it into the air with your thumb......you will hear the high pitched ringing that only silver makes if it is silver.....its a very distinctive ping. Not a dead thump like clad coins.
you can also do this with glasswear and crystal....to check to see if there is a crack in it....if it doesnt ring there could be a crack. THE MORE YOU KNOW! ----==== *
Well the small difference in weight could be due to wear and oxidation on the coin, and like BubbaDBear said, copy coins would have the word COPY on the coin somewhere.
Ok I wanted to try to provide some more info on this trade dollar so I got hold of an electronic scale! The dollar is showing a weight of 26.3 grams. I am hoping this helps with the discussion and let me know if there is anythig else I can do...Thank You!
