Rare coin for collectors, 1943 Silver Color Penny. Sorry I can't read the letter under the date. Too small for my old eyes. This is in good shape, not cleaned. Auction is "As Is".

but it does have a letter under the date ?? i need an S to fill a book i got on here. might be worth taking a chance if there is a letter under the date. i figure 50-50 then, not really, but about.

Yes it does have a letter. This is not a copper penny it is made of steel I think. They were not made for very long. I was told that they rusted. You could Google it and get better information. Has wheat on the back.

The 1943 silver colored penny is a wartime issue made of steel, and coated with zinc. During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort (to make shell casings) that the U.S. penny was made out of steel that year, which is why most 1943 pennies are silver colored.

Yep this is indeed a nice steel penny only made in 1943. Have you tried putting to a magnet to it? There are some 1943's that are made of copper, and it's extremely rare but worth a fortune ^_^

I did put a magnet to it and it stuck. So I would say it really is steel. How ever I have a few more of these. Will have to try the magnet on them also. Thanks for the information. :)
