Questions & Comments
A mourning cameo has quite a history. A very young Queen Victoria's coronation in 1837 began the Victorian Era. She loved to design her own jewelry to wear herself and used it as gifts. She influenced the jewelry artists and jewelry her whole life. After the death of her beloved husband, Albert she went into a permanent mourning. She wore only black cloths and black jewelry for the rest of her life. Her cameos were now carved only out of black jet, a fossilized driftwood. This is how the mourning cameo came into existence. Although the cameo being sold in this auction is not a Mourning cameo, it is very pretty. I would ask if the white face is glued to the red back. If you could take a picture of the back of your cameo I may be able to give you information about it that could be good or bad. It may only look like ivory with a red stone. Usually cameos are carved from one piece of shell. The white would look a bit like ivory, but usually a little flesh color will show in spots. History of Victorian Jewelry can be found in multiple locations if you google it. Queen Victoria died in 1901 and was 90 years old.
There is such a thing as white ivory morning cameo made of elephant tusk. I have not seen one attached to a rock. All the ones I saw were just the ivory. I am going to have to research this one more.
I notice you have an antique store? Why didn't you answer the question about the cameo? I am sorry I got all into Mourning cameos. I had sooo forgotten the white ivory ones. Still cannot find one attached to a rock.
From what I have read it still all comes back to Queen Victoria. Cameos were carved from shell, lava stone, ivory and jet. Maybe this type combined with the stone came about in the mid 1900's. Wish you would clarify.

Just from a really close look at the front, this is carved from shell. The back of the cameo helps me to date it. How to you come to the belief it is gold plated. Please give me that info. For instance on the back does it say 10k p or exactly what?
It will not let you update because the auction ends too soon. e-mail me at fwalker2953@yahoo.com send me your pics. I will look at them and tell you what you have. Why do you think it is gold plated?
Then you can post in your comments. You will not be able to put pictures, but at least you will know more about the cameo. Everyone will probably like that much better.
