I have my grandfather's violin that was made in 1901 and has a flowery design engraved on the scroll. I have played it since the early 1990's. My violin repairman says if he see's it one more time for repair, it will become a permanent wall hanging. :-( Being that I play for a philharmonic symphony orchestra, I need a back up violin. :-) Shanda, so sorry to here bout what happened to your fiddle.

Almost all violins are copies of Stradivari violins. Jen, do you know the maker of your old violin? Could it be a bailey? Bailey's are quite valuable in their own right, not to the level of strads, but still up there. Trouble is, back then there were many violin makers, some of which were quite good, though unknown to the world. Many very fine instruments have no labels or markings of any kind, even well versed authenticators have a tough time with some of them.
Shawn, if you could prove ownership, there's still a chance you could get that strad back. When they surface, they must always be authenticated to bring the big money. All such items are legally required to be returned to the rightful owner. However, I kind of doubt that it was really a strad. They're quite rare, and most all have been well documented. Many very old violins have a strad label in them, they were making forgeries even in Stradivari's time. Once he built a reputation, the forgeries started. I'd really rather have an Amatti, the ones made while Stradivari was apprenticed to Amatti. Some of those bearing the Amatti name were actually made by Antonio. Anyone need to know anything else about violins? I have the scoop.

I used to own a Stradivarius, given to me by a 97 yr old Italian man, during my college yrs. I had it appraised and the value was well over a million. I wish I still had it but it was stolen from my car when I stopped for a carry out order of pizza. My door lock was busted. FANNED & WATCHING
