I have no idea, how can you tell? I just know we bought a whole lot of these from an elderly man, (a grandfather of my friend) and he said they are very old. I gave away 6 at my other auction. They were super nice too. I will see if I can find out what they are made of. Thanks!

Those pipes are known as "Briar Pipes", they are made from the burls of the roots of a tree called Erica Arborea which is in the heather family. My great grandfather smoked a pipe exactly like these, they were his favorite.
