Looks like, if I am looking at the right spot, that a prong might cover that or if it is set using the art of wire wrapping you would never see it.

Correct again!!! You're on fire today my friend!!!!! The small chip on the back side is very small and can also be lost in the setting!!! Can't wait to put my chalcedony(think that's how it's spelled) up for auction. It is quite stunning and I have some fire opals to go with it...stay tuned!!
