Every single time I bid, it pops up saying I have been out bid, even when I went up by like 40.

Probably because the previous bidder bidded a higher amount. That person's bid is only increasing when someone outbids THEM....once someone else bids HIGHER than that persons highest bid, they will take over with the highest bid....The idea is to bid the amount that you are WILLING to pay....in other words, your TOP amount. Then your bidding amounts will increase only as other people bid.
