This is a lovely book is written by A. J. Downing, a personal friend of President John Quincy Adams; and to whom Downing dedicated this book.

This book is an intensive study into the art of landscape gardening. However, this book looks into landscaping a large parcel of property, rather than the quarter-acre plots that we are all used to living within this day and age. Best described, I would say this is the “how-to” in planning the aesthetics of a farmstead or plantation. Yet, with that being said, this book still offers valuable information on types of trees, shrubs, flowers and vines; as well as guidelines and how to work the natural landscape of the ground. Within the text are several excerpts from works of poetry about trees, land, and gardening.

Illustrations are included. 451 pages.
