Mario Tennis is (obviously!) a tennis game for the Game Boy Color. It is the third Mario Tennis game in the series and the first handheld. The game features an RPG-like story mode, in which the player controls either Alex or Nina in a quest to become the top tennis player and beat the best player of all, Mario. This game is compatible with the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Player (for the Nintendo GameCube). It's a popular and high-rated game (9/10 from IGN, 8.75/10 from Game informer, an A- from Gaming Age, 39/40 from Portable Review and a 5/5 from Nintendo Power).

It is a conversion of the equally brilliant game for the Nintendo 64; the Game Boy Color edition offers near-exact game play in its 2D-friendly environment. The game plays nearly identically to the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Tennis, but the career mode and mini-games are so deep and rewarding that folks who have blown through the N64 title will find a ton more things to uncover in the on-the-go edition.

Mario Tennis for GBC features more than 20 characters (Luigi, Baby Mario, Donkey Kong, Mario, Princess Peach and more); four court types; three save slots; Mario Tour, Exhibition, and mini-game modes; and link cable support for two players. According to the IGN review, “It's a brilliant game, absolutely just one ace shy of perfection on the handheld.”
