Kate Winthrop wants back the money her ex-husband stole from her during their marriage. An heiress who had inherited a huge fortune upon the death of her father, Kate was used by her husband. Now, he's with someone else, and in the opening chapter of A WOMAN WITH SECRETS, Kate is plotting to steal back the money he took. When she finds a hidden leather bag with money, she knows it's hers and takes it after breaking into his home while he and his wife are out. She knows he'll figure out she stole the money, so her plan is to find a way to hide out somewhere remote so that he will have time to cool off before coming after her.
Kate ends up taking the place of her friend Tyler, who was about to take a cruise. Instead of a luxury ship, Kate finds she's about to board a small boat, and she's to be part of the crew. This was NOT the vacation she had planned, but she has no choice. She needs to get away so her ex can't find her.
Cole Hunter is the owner of the boat, and he's not happy to see Kate show up. She is the epitome of money and beauty and sophistication, and he cannot imagine that she will be able to manage helping out on the boat, as all the passengers had agreed on doing on this trip. One by one, his passengers arrive and it seems that none of them were prepared for this trip. Everyone expected this to be a pleasure cruise. Cole expects it will be one hell of a ride.
Kate and Cole eventually bond during a night in which Kate falls to seasickness, and Cole helps her. Cole soon finds that Kate is not the woman he assumed she was, and is fascinated by what he learns about her. Kate, however worries that Cole will find out that she's deceived him, and when the boat is the target of possible burglary, Kate wonders if she and the stolen money that was rightfully hers was the real intended victim.
