Marimos here!! For those of you who know what they are I am gifting away 2 baby marimo. My marimos gave off 2 little balls recently and I wanted to share them on listia. For those of you who don't know what they are, they are very interesting and I am sure you will love them.
A marimo is a rare growth form of the species where algae grow into large green balls with a velvety appearance and are only found naturally in a number of lakes in the northern hemisphere. They are known as japanese moss ball that grow about 5mm per year and can live up to 200 years!!
Marimo has been around since the 1920s and are a japanese national treasure. Japan holds festivals annualy for marimo and believe that they give off good luck and are a symbol of everlasting love.
They are also compared to the earth in being green and round and their need to rotate to receive light on all sides; they also float sometimes depending on light and water and roll around on the bottom floor! In Japan at lake Akan a great effort is spent to conserve the lake balls. Marimo are only known to form in Iceland, Japan, Estonia & Scottland.
They can grow really big but very slowly. It is also said that taking excellent care of your pet Marimo will make all your wishes will come true!
