Description

The listing, 1986D LIBERTY HALF DOLLAR (GEM/Uncirculated) has ended.

The 1986 half dollar piece was designed to commemorate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty as a gift from France to the United States. This US half dollar was the first commemorative coin to be struck in clad metal, and had the highest distribution figure of any other commemorative coin. The copper-nickel coin features an obverse designed by Edgar Steever, and depicts a ship of immigrants entering New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the foreground and a rising sun in the background. Inscripted on the US half dollar are the words "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the date "1986". The reverse of the copper-nickel coin is designed by Sheryl Winter, and features an immigrant family with their belongings viewing America from Ellis Island. The inscriptions include "United States Of America", A Nation Of Immigrants", "E Pluribus Unum", and "Half Dollar". The 1986 half dollar piece is composed of 91.67 percent copper, and 8.33 percent nickel. The diameter measures 1.20 inches, and the thickness is 0.07 inches. The US dollar weighs 0.40 oz. This US half dollar was in production for one year only, from 1985-1986.
Interestingly, the minting of these coins and the profits of them, was used in restoring Miss Liberty. All expectations were greatly execeeded! The coin was minted in three denominations in connection with the observation: the Statue of Liberty half dollar (made in copper-nickel clad alloy; the first commemorative in this format), the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island silver dollar, and the Statue of Liberty $5 gold piece, under provisions of the Act of July 9, 1985, which provided for the coinage of up to 25,000,000 half dollars, 10,000,000 silver dollars, and 500,000 $5 gold coins. The official sale period was from November 1, 1985, through December 31, 1986.
