Xbox live allows you to play online with your friends, family, and other players. While you are in a game and you only want to talk to your friends you can send them a party invite so you can only talk to them.
But if you don't feel like playing a game you can access apps like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, and other things like xbox music, xbox game store or you can even go on the internet.
