Amazon Review By The Mysterious Traveler 8/15/12
When Arizona lawman Coogan is sent to Manhattan to extradite a criminal, his own impetuosity and the rather condescending attitude of the city natives impel him to try and cut through the red tape to get his man. His bluff instead results in the crook's escape and now Coogan must hunt him down in the unfamiliar and hostile streets of late Sixties New York.
As I written on previous occasions, the late Sixties/early Seventies was the Golden Age of the Police drama and this is a typically fine example of the form at its best and by one of its masters. Don Siegel.
It is just so overwhelmingly pleasant to sit back and watch a film that you will not have to make allowances for like it is some special child. Siegel was a man who knew his craft and still had the talent both before and behind the camera to support and give his efforts that brilliant glow that movies used to have as a matter of course.
The cast is superb. I remember back in the day when critics used to accuse Eastwood of being a bad actor. Such rot. He gives a solid nuanced controlled performance of utter believability. When he is on-screen, your eyes are on him. Clark, Stroud and Doyle(Bosley from CHARLIE'S ANGELS) are all good and Cobb is a wonder as the generally exasperated NY cop having to deal with the insanity of his city plus this cowboy from Arizona.
The film was shot on location and is a valuable document of how the city looked at that time and the scenes set around Fort Washington and the Cloisters are impressively photographed.
When this came out, it was probably just considered a typical action movie and nothing more.
Now?
It is only an example of movies how they used to be.
Superior. Intelligent. A classic.
Highly recommended.
Really.
