The listing, Eggplant Extravaganza! Tiered Winner's Choice: 8 Rare Heirloom Varieties to choose from has ended.

Tired of the same-old big purple eggplants? Here's your chance to try some interesting (different!) - and rare - heirloom eggplant varieties. I bought these seeds from Sandhill Preservation Center (great folks, doing great work to preserve the genetic heritage of our food crops) - and they sent me a LOT of seeds - so here I am: passing the bounty on to you!

I have 8 varieties to choose from. This is a tiered auction: bids up to 500 get ONE choice. For each additional 500 credits you get one more choice (501-1000 gets you 2, 1001-1500 gets you 3, and so on to get all 8 the bidding will have to get over 3500.)

What you'll get is 7 seeds of each variety you choose. Here are the varieties (The following descriptions are from the folks at Sandhill):

* Applegreen: 65 days. A nice flavored, round eggplant. Apple green colored skin. Tasty and easy to slice. Nice dwarf plants are very productive. (pic #3)

* Chinese White Sword: 65 days. Long, skinny, very straight, white fruits. (pic #7)

* Diamond: 72 days. Russian variety that is a super heavy producer of fat 6 to 8 inch long slicer type eggplant. A superb type.(pic #4)

* Early Black Egg: 63 days. Small, nearly round, deep purple fruits. (pic #6)

* Long Green: 75 days. Very productive, long slender, pale green fruits. (pic #5)

* Rosita: 78 days. Rose-lavender skin, 6 to 8 inches long, heirloom from Puerto Rico. (pic #2)

* Udumalabet: 51 days. Fist sized. Starts out greenish with purple streaks, then turns a deep golden color with purple streaks. Very attractive and productive. (pic #1)

* Waimanalo Long: 85 days. Very, slender, snake-shaped, dark long purple fruit. (pic #8)

That's a total of 54 seeds - grow tons of eggplant! And the seed is all organically grown!

I've never heard of the green variants. Where do they come from? The stores here carry most of the others as specialty vegetables, with the large Black Beauty as the main display.

Well green eggplant varieties are pretty common/popular in Asia...seed companies that specialize in oriental veggies list lots of different kinds
