The listing, Tomatoes in Winter! Rare "Keeping" Tomato has ended.
Fresh tomatoes in mid-winter - gotta have 'em!
Here's a really interesting tomato - it's called "Yellow Out/Red In" (actually, it's got orange skin & red flesh)
I got a packet of seeds from the folks at Sandhill Preservation Center, and they were very generous with their seeds - so I've got some to share!
"Yellow Out Red In" is considered the best of several varieties known as "keeping tomatoes" - A truly rare and hard to find tomato.
"What is a "keeping tomato" you may ask? Well first off they are one of the last tomatoes in the garden to produce. Which is exactly what you want! Then you either pick the tomatoes or hang the whole plant upside down the the closet or root cellar. It is that simple. Their thick skins make them a great keeper in a cool environment. So while your friends are eating canned tomatoes you will still have some hanging around!
"A perfect remedy to buying those tasteless hothouse grown tomatoes in December. Plus it is sustainable compared to all that heating fuel for hothouse tomatoes or, worse yet, tomatoes flown in from Chile." (info from the Sustainable Seed Company, here in Northern California, where this variety produces fruit into November - surviving several minor frosts)
Culture and handling notes from Sandhill: "Keep the fruits off of the ground when being grown and harvest prior to frost. Fruits have kept until February from an October picking. For best keeping quality, pick as late in the season as possible (but prior to frost) then store (with fruits not touching) in a cool, dark basement."
90 days, semi-determinate. Produces 6 oz. globes that are tart and lightly sweet.
This auction is for 12 organically grown seeds.
