Purple Heart recipient LTC Scheider retired from the US Army after 20 years of service, including serving in the Vietnam War, in which he was shot and wounded. LTC Scheider is pictured here in Vietnam holding an enemy Simonov SKS-45. Later, he was shot thru the hand while holding a military phone. The handle of the phone literally saved his life.
