The listing, Resident Evil 1: The Umbrella Conspiracy has ended.
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy, the first book in the series published, was actually not as irritating. It still suffered from the same problems, but a lot of the jumps actually added something to the story other than another perspective on things. It usually had things like science reports or newspaper reports to fill up the story more. Sure the other book had this, but it largely focused on giving as many perspectives as possible on the events.
Still, it suffered from similarly lazy writing. Note, this isn’t to say it was bad writing like for Zero Hour. It was just lazy. Some of the jumps really offered nothing more than another perspective. If it jumps from a character that seems like he/she is about to die over to one that might be following one of the seemingly inconsequential puzzles, like some of the jumps in the book, it has a very jarring effect. Occasionally it works. It usually doesn’t though.
Sure the books aren’t entirely bad but one of the other things that the books don’t do really well is description. If you’ve played the games, you’d know what’s being described without a problem. Though I have met people who have read the books before trying the series out. For people who don’t know the series, the books definitely are not going to do the series any justice.
Either way, these technically to first books of the series, even though Zero Hour was the last book released, are pretty weak. Science Fiction and horror tends to grip the minds of their audience when it’s done right. These, at best, merely poke at the minds of their audience.
