Questions & Comments
Wanted to let you know about Lisner jewelry, which was once considered junk jewelry, became collectible in the 1990's. "Founded in 1904 Lisner imported and sold Elsa Schiaparelli's Parisian jewelry in the United States. In the '30s, the company achieved a higher profile by finally selling its own designs that employed Dupont's new colored acrylic plastic called Lucite, as well as clear and colored rhinestones (particularly aurora borealis) and lava stones, as well as chromed, silver-plated, and black japanned metal. Currently, one of the most coveted vintage Lisner lines is the molded plastic oak-leaf jewelry, which was only produced for five years in the '60s. Individual pieces like pins or necklaces without matching bracelets or earrings are more affordable." Information above is from: " Collectors Weekly", found on the internet. This is a very nice piece, possibly plastic by Dupont.
Thank you again for the information. I really appreciate learning. I have a large collection of cameos that I would love for you to look at!! After looking at this cameo with a loupe and a flashlight I agree with you and I believe it is Lucite. From the amount of dust on it has been around for a while. I guess I should start looking up some of the jewelry I have. Thank you again, and if you can offer information on any other of my listings I would more than appreciate it. Lora
I am not trying to say what the cameo is or is not as far as shell or plastic, only that there is a good chance that it could be Dupont. It is still really high quality and very collectible. The flashlight trick would not work to figure it out in that event. Depends on the age of it and loupe it or use a magnifying glass to look for carving marks.
Thank you!! I do not believe the cameo is carved from shell. It is amazing that looking at it with just your plain eye it looks like carving marks. I have to admit it looks almost as real as some of my shell cameos. Thank you for the information!!
These are very collectible. The name Lisner, even though not on the same level as shell cameos mounted in gold, is certainly a powerful influence on high end costume jewelry, specializing in Victorian brooch reproductions. I have a few resin or plastic-like material cameos, which are so like Shell or stone carved, unless you look very close, you would think it was big money cameo. They have a place in the history of jewelry as an affordable thing of beauty for those of us not in the "money" crowd. Fanned, watching and biding. Please fan back. I need the fans, just starting out earlier this year.
