The listing, VINTAGE PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH HEX SIGN DISTELFINKS BIRDS EARRINGS CLIP BACKS has ended.
This is vintage pair of HEX SIGN EARRINGS!
What is a Hex Sign? The Pennsylvania Dutch settlers brought their customs and traditions to Pennsylvania and one of those was that their farmers liked to decorate their barns with colorful yet meaningful symbols. One of the more popular design was a star with 6 points. The German word for six is "sechs" and this was mistakenly heard to be "HEX" by those that spoke English here. So these became known as "Hex Signs".
The signs have different meanings and families would chose which signs they wanted to display based on those meanings. . Some of the more popular symbols are: hearts for love, distelfinks birds for luck and happiness, tulips for faith, and stars for good luck. The colors used were also carefully chosen because of their meaning as well. Blue means protection, white stands for purity, green means abundance and red is a color of strong emotion.
This pair of earrings have the distelfink birds along with a heart, in red and blue on white.
They are round and measure about 5/8" in length.
They have clip on backs, for non-pierce ears.
