The listing, glorious black glass mourning cameo has ended.
A pretty piece that appears to be in a setting that to me looks to be gold filled. ( however i cannot guarantee that.) very ornate. it doubles as a pendant as well. it measures an inch and a half tall. the cameo itself is made of jet black glass. the new owner will be pleased with this. cam 1
Questions & Comments
The clasp appears to be modern. Definitely not a tube closure which would place it in the Victorian era. Here's a tip for everyone out there, if you are looking at a clasp and want to figure a date, if the stick pin part goes beyond the closure it's probably old, if it sits in the c and doesn't hang over it's very likely it's modern 50's on up. Nice pin though. :-)
How do you know if it's a mourning pin? I have two black cameos, but did not realize that they are mourning pins. Mom & I just thought they are very pretty.
Mourning cameos always get the highest bids. Rightly so, especially with a well made one. This happens to be one of many Victorian Brooches that the clasp was patented for. Victorian brooches were his passion from what I was able to find. This one is well done. Whatever the gold may or may not be, it is buttery and the picture just cannot show the true beauty. I am bidding however far I can go. I won one and hope to win another. I lost the last one by 50 credits, because I was too slow with the submit button. Maybe I'll have better luck this time. I have a friend I wanted to give one to. If I lose, it won't be for lack of trying. It truly is a treasure.
hey doodle bears, you are right elainefwalker and i had this same conversation a while back, and i didint change the ad. to me it looked gold filled, but i cannot find a marking on it. so lets just assume it is not gold filled. hey thanks so much for your interest!
So pretty. F&W. Gold Filled will def be stamped Gold Filled w/ percentage marked as well right beside it. If it isn't, then it's gold-plated. Still a very pretty piece. I love the black glass. ^~^
