Description
The listing, Khmer art carving skin made in Cambodia by orphans. Hanuman, the Hindu God. Interpreted by a child. has ended.
This is a leather carved wall hanging made by orphans in Cambodia. I don't remember how I came across this but I have another made of darker leather in the shape of an elephant. I'm not sure what this is a carving of either. If anyone can help me figure anything out about this I would love to know because I get so many questions about it. All I know is they would sell these on the streets in Cambodia for money and They're extremely beautiful and detailed.
This wall hanging is a foot tall. all items from a smoke free home.
PLEASE NOTE: the elephant is not included. It is just another example of Khmer art carvings.
Questions & Comments
these are copied from indonesian art, usually a character from or of a story told among generations. some depict good charachters while others depict villians in the stories told. they are also used as puppets in theater. its a nice piece.
Wow thank you soo much! I wish I knew the story behind this guy but I wouldn't even know where to begin on Googling it. Very interesting!! Thanks so much for all your help I literally knew nothing about this other than what the package said.
It resembles Hanuman, a Hindu god, a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana. A vanara (monkey-like humanoid), Hanuman participated in Rama's war against the demon king Ravana.
I would love to see the elephant....I recently returned from Thailand, and I just love elephants right now, lol.
I posted a picture of the elephant for you! I might list it now that I know more about these and have more to write on the description other than "uhh.. yeah this is leather and I don't know how I got it" Hahaha.
Thank you sooo much foe the facts!! It makes so much more sense now! I was like, I think it's a monkey but like.. a really big one. And that was about as far as I knew. I'm totally Googling this now! Thanks for the help you have no clue how much I appreciate it.
It's Erawan! The holy 3-headed elephant...Google that, you will enjoy reading about Erawan. If you are willing, I would be very interested in GINning both pieces, since there are no bids yet.
