Monica befriends Kate Prescott, whose son Thomas is on trial for the murder of a young woman. The jury finds Thomas not guilty, but the victim's father and the community impose their own judgment.
Kate stands up for her son in the face of mounting opposition until she discovers evidence that suggests Thomas may be lying.
Meanwhile, Tess tries to comfort the victim's father, a bitter man who has confused justice with revenge.

Three years after he was acquitted of murder, Thomas Prescott returns to his mother's home, this time with his seven-year-old son in tow.
Thomas claims to have turned over a new leaf, but Monica soon learns that he is using drugs.
Moreover, he appears to be indifferent to the needs of his son.
Kate is still consumed with guilt over doubting her son when he needed her the most.
Determined to set things right, she turns a blind eye to his reckless behavior.
The angels help her see the truth, but it may be too late — Thomas's mistakes are about to catch up with him, putting his family in grave danger.
