With their showy blooms and giant stature, hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) make an interesting addition to any cottage garden.
The plants can reach heights of 6 to 9 feet and work well as a background plant to add height or to cover up an ugly wall.
Most of them said they do not bloom the first year, but will form pretty leaves and a deep root system. One site told how they made it through a flood. So just be patient, it will be well worth it!
