Lily of St. Nicholas
PANCRATIUM MARITIMUM
"I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys."...Song of Solomon
Originating in the Mediterranean, this enchanting coastal Lily is connected to both the Patron Saint Nicholas and the Song of Solomon (2:1).
Spanning both sides of the Mediterranean Sea, this ancient flower has quite the historical past. Closely related to the Rose of Sharon, as well as having grown in the Sharon plain, which today includes the modern edge of Tel Aviv, Israel, scholars believe this brilliant-white, sand and sun worshiping Lily, to be the famous flower mentioned in the Song of Solomon.
Raised in the Mediterranean port of Myra, today's modern Turkey, St. Nicholas would have also grown up among the magically appearing and sweetly scented Lily Maritimum's (of the sea) pictured in his portrait. As an avid lover of the sea, Nicholas also loved and admired its dirty, smelly, journey tired sailors and adopted each as his own brother. Though himself poor, he shared small gifts of food, clothes and most importantly, his respect and attention towards the seamen. In return, his name would be lovingly cast from port to port in tribute of his good deeds. And even today, you would be hard pressed to find a sailor who does not bear a trinket of the generous priest they called the "Patron Saint of Sailors" lovingly remembered by his favorite Lily lining the coastal regions along their voyages.
Later in time, the good deeds and small presents given by the poor priest would give rise to the two 'winter gift giving characters' of St. Nicholas and Santa Clause.
