I fanned you. I am looking for a internet card so I can take my laptop with me when I house and dog sit for a week. Where I will be going the person doesn't have a house phone. He had one and had it cut off. I will only be there for 7 days, so I want something where I can take my laptop and still get on line. Can you please tell me what I need. I have a Toshiba A105 satallite series and it does have wifi. The TV there runs off of Dish Network. I just want to make sure I can get internet connection for the 7 days. I hope you can help me. Thank you. Maybe you have what I need to get on the internet at that place where there isn't any real internet service, like cable..

Did you get my earlier explanation(s)? I'm new and didn't know I had to reply to things in two places on Listia----I had already commented right on the page itself. :-)

Thank you for the above info. I guess my cell won't work because it works on verizon but it is a walmart phone prepaid called straight talk. Straight talk says it won't work. Thank you again for the above info.

Hmmm....it does have wifi but no wifi service, correct? Ish, that's a toughie because you need a cord to go into an internet "box." And they have DISH service, which means their connection box must have a plugin for the cord but you'd have to know their account information to get online...or create one on their DISH service.

Do you have a cell phone and, if so, who is the carrier? I've used my cell phone as an external modem. If your cell phone will work from their area, then it will work as a modem. I've been in your situation and my phone has been the lifesaver.

So, my best advice to you is to call your cell phone carrier and find out what your options are. You may have to pay/be billed for the service up front but my carrier (Verizon) lets me cancel when I'm done using my cell as a modem with my laptop and charges me for just the days I used it.

You might need a particular 'hookup' cable but you should be able to get one of those in time for your 'sitting.'

Do know that when you use your cell to get online, it can be a bit slower than you might be used to but it DOES work. I've used mine on AmTrak when on vacation and it worked like a charm.

Hope this helps!

Oh, to clarify, it's a 'data cable' you might need to hook your cell up to your laptop. Again, call your cell phone provider to see what they offer. It's the way I go even when driving on the road and I use my laptop as a GPS. I think I paid (after the prorate) about $12 for 5 days through Verizon, if that helps you figure out the cost.

Darn it! Yeah, the only thing left is to somehow get on their direct tv box and THEN what I have will work for you (and you'd need an RJ5 internet cord). Grrrr....that's hard being offline that long. Let me know if you figured out another way. Now, if you have a Verizon account, they should be able to give you a phone for free to work with a data cable. I know myself and everyone else I know who got an account with Verizon also got a free phone to go with the new account. (???)
