Established in 1942 as part of the Office of War Information, the Voice of America (VOA) is the international radio network of the U.S. Information Agency. VOA is charged with promoting a favorable understanding of the United States abroad. It uses a variety of programming. In 1983 it utilized 107 transmitters around the world, broadcasting about 960 hours a week in 42 languages.
