Amateur (ham) radio, a noncommercial system of communication, is as old as the radio medium itself. Over the years, radio amateurs have made important contributions to the field. Now widely used by the military, amateurs perfected single sideband mode after World War II; in the 1970s three radio amateurs developed the system of narrow -band voice modulation. Both systems offer dramatic improvements over amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) for long-distance voice communication and have increased the number of stations that can use a given portion of the crowded radio spectrum at any one time.
Although a hobby, amateur radio perhaps is best known for the emergency communications provided during times of disaster. To obtain their operating licenses, amateurs are required to pass a written examination. The leading organization of amateur radio operators is the American Radio Relay League, with headquarters in Newington, CT. note : all stamps shipped asap and/or with in 7 day close of auction.
